Hideki Noda awarded at the New York 2023 ISPA Awards

Hideki Noda, the Artistic Director of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, was awarded at the New York 2023 ISPA Awards, a prestigious ceremony organised by the International Society for the Performing Arts, based on the recommendation of Constantin Chiriac, the General Director of the Radu Stanca National Theatre and the President of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
Hideki Noda received the Distinguished Artist Award for his outstanding contribution of talent, artistry, dedication, and service to the world of the performing arts, at a ceremony which has recently taken place in New York.
Hideki Noda is a close collaborator of the International Theatre Festival, having been to Sibiu on several occasions. A complex personality of Japanese and world theatre, actor, director, playwright, professor, and theatre director, Hideki Noda also received a star on the Walk of Fame for his revolutionary art, in dialogue with the great movements of world theatre.
ISPA is a global network of more than 500 leaders in the performing arts with representation from more than 185 cities and all regions of the globe. ISPA members include facilities, performing arts organisations, artist managers, festivals, funders, consultants and other professionals working in the performing arts.
Hideki Noda was born in Nagasaki in 1955 and, in July 2009, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre; he is currently professor at Tama Art University. Noda created his first theatre company, Yume no Yuminsha (Dreaming Bohemian), while he was still a student at the University of Tokyo and he produced many acclaimed performances. In 1992, he went to study in London. In 1993, when he came back, he laid the foundation of the NODA MAP production company. Since then, he has produced myriad successful performances, such as: Kill, Pandora no kane (Pandora’s Bell), Oil, Akaoni (Red Demon), THE BEE, THE DIVER, The Character, Egg, Gekirin, and Footprint Princess. He has collaborated with the kabuki actor Nakamura Kanzaburo XVIII, he has adapated kabuki plays and has directed productions based on his original versions of kabuki plays, including: Tragedy of Togitatsu, Nezumikozo etc. Moreover, Noda has been actively involved in international productions, collaborating with British, Thai and Korean actors. He has won numerous important theatre awards in Japan, including the Asahi Prize (2009). In October 2009, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and, in June 2011, he received the Medal with Purple Ribbon for his contributions to education and culture. He has been on many tours all over the world.
