TNRS, the first foreign theatre invited to China after the pandemic

The "Radu Stanca" National Theatre of Sibiu (TNRS) is invited to China for the Modern Drama Valley Festival, where it will present the performance "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", by Edward Albee, directed by Andrei and Andreea Grosu, from April 29 to 5 May. The Yun Feng Theatre in Shanghai will host three performances of the production starring Ofelia Popii, Marius Turdeanu, Antonia Dobocan and Horia Fedorca.

"We are the first theatre in the world to be welcomed on tour in China after the pandemic period. For 2020, we had planned a complex tour featuring the performances The Scarlet Princess and Waiting for Godot, both directed by Silviu Purcărete, but, unfortunately, events took a completely different turn and we had to cancel. For the current tour, the Modern Drama Valley Festival is providing us with a 1,500-seat venue and we will have three performances. We wish to remind you of the fact that in 2018 the performance Oedipus, directed by Silviu Purcărete, was selected from the hundreds of shows that were on tour as the best foreign show presented in China, in competition with some of the most important theatres in Europe and the world. We enjoy a very good reputation and strong partnerships that we want to renew, in such a manner that cultural dialogue may represent a constructive dimension for the human being, beyond everything represented by the threats of destruction, of war, of conflict. It's the work we do every day in favour of beauty, hope, emotion," said Constantin Chiriac, general director of the "Radu Stanca" National Theatre of Sibiu and President of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.

In Shanghai, performances of the TNRS show are scheduled for May 2nd at 7:30 p.m. and May 3rd at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The tour was made possible due to the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Since its premiere in May 2019, the performance "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?", the scenography of which is signed by Vladimir Turturica, has enjoyed success on the TNRS stage and as part of national tours.
