The 18 year old Doris, living at the beginning of the 30s, gets bored in her small hometown. She works as a secretary for a lawyer. She dreams of being famous. Coming from a poor social background, and not being educated, she nonetheless feels like being something special, and starts writing a journal about her life. This journal is made up of different male acquaintances, a big love that failed and her dream of being famous as a singer and dancer, admired by men. She manages to get to Berlin, but the big city crashes her hopes, and pulls her deep into a vortex of disillusions. The beautiful dream of a glamorous life crumbles gradually into a nightmare, and Doris fights against it all, with despair. The young girl tells her story of trying to live up to her dreams, by using her personal charm, and her knowledge of the human nature, or better said, the nature of men. She speaks with a refreshing directness, being naïve and pragmatic at the same time. Doris loves the songs of 30s Berlin, she loves the dance and tries to find her place in the world.
