“There is nothing embellished here, the language is full of life and energy, it’s the language of the street, raw and non-literary.
We are looking at the bleak, everyday life of a young man from the bottom class of the Russian society and we think about the young Romanian men that are day dreaming and suffering terrible disappointments right before our eyes, because no one gives them any consideration.
The imagination of the adults is affected by clichés, just like in the real world. At least this is how the young people perceive it, like a violent game or like a tool for fulfilling one’s dreams and animal needs.
“What do you want from me? Leave me alone!” screams young Maxim. His desperate scream is lost in a world full of automatic gestures, full of brutality and ambition, a world where no one listens and no one approaches anyone.
Maxim becomes a toy to play with for his teachers and neighbours, for prostitutes and sadists, even for his wealthier colleagues.
The tragedy relays in the fact that every spectator can see right from the start how Maxim is walking towards his death and how he is manipulated to do so. “Not yet” is the answer always given by Maxim to the invitation to step into the death.
The vision of director Vlad Massaci is really brutal, has no decorations, nothing to temper the text of 30 years old Vasili Sigariev.” - Beatrice Ungar
