“Why can’t we stop ourselves from staring at movies, TV shows and tons of magazines which insist that beauty is important… It isn’t. It isn’t in the slightest – a common girl has a pretty face and we go completely insane, we offer her flowers and modelling contracts and we make all kinds of efforts just to her into bed.”
Neil LaBute is one of the greatest contemporary playwrights, and his great talent consist of the fact that he holds the mirror in front of us. This mirror does not show a very pretty image, it doesn’t show us the self-image we have created with so much effort, but it does show us our abysses, it shows us how insignificant some of our actions are. We struggle, we work at jobs we didn’t chose, we buy tons of things that we didn’t need and we try to prove something to others and ourselves. It could be so simple, we could just be honest, at least in front of friends and family, or at least with our partner.
Finding the courage to be honest is the easiest way to maturity. It is the way in which we can grow and we can accept others and ourselves. “Reasons to be pretty” is a black comedy, that plays with the vanity and superficiality within us, but that at the same time, shows us that it’s not that hard to follow a different road.
