“Alice”, Directed and Choreographed by Ștefan Lupu, a New Premiere of the TNRS German Department

The “Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu will present the preview performances and premiere of “Alice”, directed and choreographed by Ștefan Lupu, in September. The previews are scheduled for 12 September at 7:00 p.m. and 13 September at 5:00 p.m., while the premiere performances will take place on 24 and 25 September at 7:00 p.m., as part of the German Department Mini-Season. All performances will be held at Fabrica de Cultură – Sala Lulu, 1–3 Triajului Street.

“Who is Alice in a wonderland? What about in a world of lies? Or in an increasingly absurd world turned upside down? This story is the story of each and every one of us. Every encounter and every stage of life is a lesson that brings us closer to who we truly are. Or to who we would like to be,” says Ștefan Lupu.

The performance is directed and choreographed by Ștefan Lupu, assisted by Andrada Oltean. The set design is by Irina Moscu, video design by Andrei Cozlac, sound design by Adrian Piciorea and lighting design by Sabina Reus.

The cast includes Ada Bicfalvi, Vivianne Havrilla, Ali Deac, Daniel Bucher, Gyan Ros, Emoke Boldizsar, David Cristian, Fatma Mohamed, Fabiola Petri, Johanna Adam, Cendana Trifan, Mihai Mocanu, Patrick Imbrescu, Isabela Haiduc and Raisa Ciobanu.

What happens when the world you know no longer follows any rules? Following a White Rabbit, Alice falls into a universe where her body changes size, time has stopped at teatime, animals can speak, words take on unexpected meanings and a game of croquet can turn into a threat of beheading.

In Ștefan Lupu’s directorial and choreographic vision, Lewis Carroll’s famous story becomes a playful yet unsettling journey on stage, bringing together contemporary dance, theatre, music and projections. From the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter to the Queen of Hearts and the trial in which the verdict comes before the evidence, Wonderland follows the absurd logic of a noisy, contradictory, amusing and sometimes cruel world. Or, more simply, the logic of a surprisingly familiar world.

With intelligence and humour, Ștefan Lupu creates a compelling performance about the courage to lose oneself in order to discover who one truly is, as well as about the childhood we leave behind yet always carry in our hearts.
