Constantin Chiriac awarded, in Berlin, the star on the Walk of Fame for Sasha Waltz

Constantin Chiriac, the general manager of the "Radu Stanca" National Theatre in Sibiu and the president of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, awarded, in Berlin, on February 28, the distinction for the Walk of Fame to the artist Sasha Waltz. One of the most appreciated choreographers, dancers and directors in the world, Sasha Waltz received a star on the Walk of Fame in Sibiu in 2022, when she could not be present, which is why this ceremony was organized at the Romanian Embassy in Berlin.
"I awarded, in Berlin, at the Embassy of Romania in the Federal Republic of Germany, the distinction for the Walk of Fame of the artist Sasha Waltz, together with the Romanian Minister of Culture Raluca Turcan. The ceremony was attended by representatives of Berlin's major theatres and performance institutions, artists, and special guests. It was extraordinary!
The Minister had a very good speech, about the big names, especially women, who are becoming examples for the younger generation! All the German speakers were very impressed by the strength and vision of the Sibiu Festival! Sasha Waltz got down on one knee in her acceptance speech for #FITS!
Special thanks to the Ambassador. S.E. Adriana-Loreta STĂNESCU, to the entire embassy for the very good organization and support. A unique evening, full of projects for the future!
After three days of meetings with artists, institutions, universities, political, and cultural personalities of Berlin, we create a strategic partnership with FR Germany! We thank the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the Romanian Cultural Institute for their involvement and for the support they give us!" declared Constantin Chiriac.
Sasha Waltz is among the world’s most appreciated choreographers, dancers, and directors. After graduating from the School of New Dance Development in Amsterdam, she focused on the new post-modern directions of New York dance. In 1986 and 1987, she collaborated with Pooh Kaye, Yoshiko Chumo & School of Hard Knocks, and Lisa Kraus & Dancers. At the beginning of the ‘90s, she returned to Berlin, where she devised new choreographic approaches. In 1993, together with Jochen Sandig, she set up Sasha Waltz & Guests. In 2000-2004, she was the director of Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. During this time, she created the dance shows Travelogue and Körper and the immersive dance installation insideout, which were tremendously successful on an international level. In the following years, her focus was on revitalizing famous opera and ballet works through contemporary dance techniques. This endeavour resulted in three performances (Dido & Aeneas, in 2005; Medea, in 2007; Matsukaze, in 2011), giving rise to a new genre – choreographic opera. Other remarkable shows by Sasha Waltz include Sacre (2013) based on Igor Stravinski’s Rite of Spring, Kreatur (2017), created in collaboration with Soundwalk Collective and costume designer Irisvan Herpen, as well as Exodus (2018). In 2019-2020, Sasha Waltz was co-director of the Berlin State Ballet alongside Johannes Öhman. For her special accomplishments, Sasha Waltz was granted the German Federal Cross of Merit and, in 2013, was appointed as member of the Berlin Arts Academy.
