A night of Russian debauchery, accompanied by women, pledges and regrets, overthrown by rivers of alcohol and cynicism. Written by Chekhov, at the young age of 20, the play shows a slice of Russia’s decadent society at the end of the 19th century. Times have changed, but love and loss are experienced with the same imperfections. Award winning theatre director Alexandru Dabija takes on this passionate and risky play, which pays tribute to the histrionic tradition of the melodrama, in an expression that anticipates Chekhov’s contribution to dramatic literature: a remarkable blend of farce, comedy and drama. Alexandru Dabija’s adaptation reduces the agglomeration of incidents of the original play, ripening it to a version that is savoury, cynic and distilled to its very core. Platonov is the local schoolteacher, at an age when he is “too old to be content with play/ too young to be without desire.” He has once abandoned the joys and expectations instilled by his days as a young student, replacing them with the boredom and irony of married life. Life goes by, while his friends drink with cheekiness and deplore their fading ideals, while women succumb to his raggedy, wounding charm, and his marriage with the maternal Sasha, a mousy God-fearing woman, becomes less and less real in his eyes. What is real, what is unreal, what is serious, what is frivolous, what kind of life are we playing out – these are the questions the performance takes on.
