Three TNRS performances in the official selection of the National Theatre Festival

The "Radu Stanca" National Theatre Sibiu (TNRS) is participating with three performances in the 34th edition of the National Theatre Festival (FNT), which will take place between October 18 and 28 in Bucharest. This year’s edition of the FNT is under the banner of Playwrights of the Possible, curated by Mihaela Michailov, Călin Ciobotari and Ionuț Sociu.

“After the tour of the Francophone Summit and the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the Radu Stanca National Theatre returns home, participating in the National Theatre Festival, the great meeting of Romanian theatre every year, with three performances. They are Woyzeck, nominated this year at the UNITER Awards for best direction, Theorem and The Misunderstanding. We are happy to be able to bring three such different shows to the audience in Bucharest and to all those who are in love with theatre and want to be present at the dialog of Romanian theatre. These shows have received invitations for international participation in the coming years. We are delighted to be able to share the beauty, warmth and inspiration of the artists who have produced these three performances. We are also glad that we were able to invite several programmers from Europe, providing them with tickets in advance, so that they can see our productions”, said Constantin Chiriac, general manager of the Radu Stanca National Theatre Sibiu and president of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.

“Theorem”, after Pier Paolo Pasolini, directed by Eugen Jebeleanu, is scheduled for Sunday, October 20, at 19.00, at the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre in Bucharest, the “Ion Caramitru” Hall. A young man enters the home of a rich bourgeois. He is beauty itself. And his arrival is more a visit that is fulfilled by physical possession. The maid, Emilia, then the son of the family, Pietro, the mother, Lucia, the daughter, Odetta, and the father, Paolo, all get to know the guest in the biblical sense. But after his sudden departure, what will be left of the message he left? Will only the servant know salvation? For, unlike the bourgeois, according to Pasolini, she has not replaced her conscience with her soul, nor her morality with her sense of the sacred.

“Woyzeck” by Georg Büchner, directed by Hunor Horváth & Edith Buttingsrud Pedersen, will be performed at the FNT on Monday, October 21, at 9.30 pm, at the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre in Bucharest, the Studio Hall. The TNRS show received the 2024 UNITER Award for Best Lighting Design and was nominated for best direction. The performance is a questioning of the circumstances in which violence is born. Wozyeck is an illegitimate father, a humiliated subordinate, the subject of a medical experiment, a victim, a perpetrator, a good person, and Maria’s killer. Viewers are invited to witness the human tragedy of a society heading towards self-destruction but also to contemplate the means to find salvation through a total change of mentality.

“The Misunderstanding” by Albert Camus, directed by Bobi Pricop, is the third production of the National Theatre on Sibiu in the official selection of the National Theatre Festival. On Tuesday, October 22, at 9.30 pm, at the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre in Bucharest, the “Ion Caramitru” Hall, TNRS brings to the public one of the essential plays by Albert Camus in a captivating directorial version. We invite you to a new Bobi Pricop production, a metaphor about the “misunderstanding” between family members reflecting conflicts and means of salvation in a world caught up in a state of emergency.
