“Blood Wedding”, November p...
“Blood Wedding”, November premiere at the TNRS
The performance “Blood Wedding”, based on the text by Federico García Lorca, is the new project of the German Department of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu. The production, directed by Hunor Horváth, is a collaboration between the student-actors of the Drama and Theatre Studies Department, Faculty of Letters and Arts, “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu and an actor from the German Theatre in Timișoara.
“Blood Wedding” will have its preview on November 28 and its premiere on November 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Hall of the TNRS.
“The German department of our theatre is coming to the public in Sibiu and beyond with a new proposal. It is a creation that integrates elements of theatre, film, music, and dance and revisits elements drawn from national cultural heritage and European folklore in a modern key. We are convinced that this unique show will bring a lot of excitement and joy to the audience”, said Constantin Chiriac, General Manager of the TNRS and President of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
The whole community is preparing for a big wedding. But despite the general excitement, some people are not looking forward to it. While the groom’s mother fears that the marriage will mark a definitive break between her and her son, the bride-to-be tries in vain to forget Leonardo, who has also married.
Through “Blood Wedding”, Lorca illustrates the chronicle of a tragedy that opposes traditional mentality with the twists and turns of the human soul engulfed by passions. Honor Horváth’s adaptation for the stage takes this conflict to a new level, questioning the legitimacy of norms which, in the context of today’s Romanian society, risk unleashing a veritable human catastrophe.
Tickets are on sale:
- online at www.tnrs.ro and at
- Sibiu Theatre Agency, 17 Nicolae Balcescu Street.

Set in the Iberian Peninsula, the action of the play “Blood Wedding” focuses on the conflict between emotions and reason, as well as on repressed sexuality, perverted religion, and submission to authority, illustrating a subtle attack on Franco’s dictatorship. The parallels between the Spanish society of that era and our own contemporary society are obvious, especially in the context of an urgent need for re-evaluation and reflection, resulting from confrontation with the past. Thus, in the production of the Sibiu National Theatre, Lorca’s text becomes the foundation of a performance set in the present, in Transylvania, with the aim of proving the universality and validity of the themes addressed, while maintaining a close relationship with the world of heresies and traditions related to rites of passage, but also with the pictorial and musical universe created by the Spanish playwright.
