TNRS tour in China. "Romeo and Juliet" in Shanghai

The “Radu Stanca” National Theatre Sibiu (TNRS) is invited to the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, where it will present, in October, “Romeo and Juliet” based on W. Shakespeare, directed by Andriy Zholdak. The Romanian production will be open to Chinese audiences on October 15 and 16. The tour, which runs from October 11 to 18, is supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Romanian Ministry of Culture.

“After last year, TNRS was the first theatre in the world to be welcomed on tour in China after the pandemic period, this year we are invited once again to present one of our creations to the Chinese public. We are happy to be able to bring the miracle of theatre to such distant corners of the world, and that young student actors are also able to experience it. Moreover, “Romeo and Juliet” is a show in which the actors of the National Theatre of Sibiu perform together with students from the Drama and Theatre Studies Department of the Faculty of Letters and Arts of the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu. It is an eloquent example of how we support talented and future generations of actors. My special thanks go to the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Ministry of Culture, with whom we have realized such valuable projects", said Constantin Chiriac, general manager of TNRS and president of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
Andriy Zholdak, the author of the show, has taken a “classic” and remixed it. The well-known Ukrainian director (re)imagines the story of the two lovers in the style of a non-linear, cinematic montage, applying a surrealist filter and letting the poetic language of W. Shakespeare shine through.

“Romeo and Juliet” is a meteor shower, embodied by the theatre’s young team of actors and students of the acting department, it is the reference of a way of being, young, beautiful, and alive.
“Romeo and Juliet” is a performance created within the framework of the European project “LIBERTY”, funded by the Creative Europe Program. TNRS is a “LIBERTY” partner together with ArtReach, altonale GmbH, Explora - il Museo dei Bambini di Roma, CESIE, Aalborg Karneval, Center E8, for promoting lifestyles, CNC DANSE - nathalie cornille, Pionirski dom - Center za kulturo mladih, Den Selvejende Institution Swinging Europe, TRAFO Contemporary Art House and European Educational Exchanges - Youth for Understanding.
